While conferences are fun, it is important to know that it is ok to step back, take a deep breath, and take a moment for yourself.
This is important - bc the social stress of constantly being around people - can be difficult for the average person - and especially difficult for an introverted academic.
So tips for making sure you get the intellectual space that you need.
1. It ok to take a break from the conference.
You don’t have to talk to people all day.
Taking time for yourself is ok.
2. Everyone is as awkward as you are. Some are just better at hiding it.
If you think everyone else is doing great, and you are the exception, you would be wrong.
So embrace your weirdness.
3. Yes, the social event is painful. Yes, you have to go.
You need to meet people.
If you accept that social events are necessary evils, it is easier to navigate them.
4. Hang out after the presentation.
You need to meet people. It also become a smaller group of people so it’s easier to manage.
5. Practice your elevator speech.
You never know who you may run into.
It’s less stressful if you have a plan for what to say.
6. Avoid open bars.
The cheap liquor won’t feel good the next day.
You will also feel more anxious bc of the alcohol!
7. Sleep.
You aren’t a young buck.
If you are rested, you will find it easier to handle the emotions and stressors of crowded events.
Most people drink too much and sleep to little at conferences- take care to manage your intake and make time for sleep - you will enjoy the conference more if you do.
