On Financial Inequity & Open Access publications.
I was all for Open Access until I was asked to pay 3,000 USD+ to publish my paper in that format in a vital journal (FT50).
I thought to myself, "how will faculty at poorer universities? Or independent scholars? Publish their work in the future?"
I am all for Open Science. I am all for Open Access.
I am not for the cost structure of making authors pay for Open Access.
I am not for the inequity that it introduces to where costs drive where scholars can and can not publish their work.
I am not for the inequity it creates in who can read and who can not read scholars' work - with rich scholars being able to disseminate their work more quickly and widely.
I am not for the stress it creates for young scholars, who must come up with extra cash to pay publishers to make their work available to the entire research community.
Open Access was started as a means to ensure that the public who paid for research was able to read the research.
With the current cost structures, now I wonder - will we be restricted to reading the work of the wealthy? And be duped into thinking we are reading the work of everyone?
