On getting back to the new normal at ITU-Copenhagen.

When covid started, I had to cancel teaching executives at ITU-Copenhagen in person.

Not being physically present left a hole in my world. My time with Danish executives was my favorite time in the classroom, pushing me to get better and stay abreast of shifts in technology management.

The pandemic isn’t over - but it’s time to establish a new routine - today will be my first time physically in a classroom with Danish executives in two years.

I feel like a rookie starting all over again.

I am a bit anxious, confident that I know the material, and wonder if my jokes will still work.

How did I prepare?

First, I created more room for students to share their experiences.

I invested in streamlining and updating my slides. I’m sure the students will have new stories to share about how they used IT and changed the architecture to navigate the pandemic.

Second, I revisited my narratives.

A lot changed in practice while I was ‘out’ teaching online. It’s taken some time - but I’ve had to update my thinking about what is essential.

Third, I focused on what stayed the same.

While the pandemic happened, it would be a mistake to think the changes were permanent. We still need to teach classic principles, talk about what does and does not apply today, and encourage conversations about what might come back.

Fourth, I told myself it was ok to be nervous - even uncomfortable.

Where I live, we still have a mask mandate from time to time. Where I am teaching in Denmark, masks are a distant memory.

I figure that it’ll take a few minutes to be comfortable not wearing a mask in a room full of new friends.

Finally, I reminded myself that I love being in the classroom.

I am excited about meeting this fresh batch of students - I learn more from executives - than they realize.

The last time I taught in this program, I left with ideas that framed four projects I’m working on now.

You can only learn from students if everyone is having fun!

Wish me luck! Even old dogs feel nervous on the first day of school!
