On global academic challenges (or the global north and south share some issues?)

I started my LinkedIn presence bc I was interested in sharing my thoughts, some tips, and some tricks on how to navigate academic life.

I wanted to stimulate a conversation about building a kinder and gentler academy.

I thought that I might find a small US audience.

As the past year unfolded, I found that I picked up more and more followers among students and early career faculty in Europe and then India.

Through informal conversations, I have come to suspect that folks are reading my posts in China, Singapore and Korea.

What is important, is that I write for a demographic - not a location - and that message of care, kindness, and optimism about the future of the academy seems to resonate among early career scholars in all corners of the world.

What these numbers suggest to me, is that while our context and resources differs, we all face similar challenges - tied to advising, mentoring, publication and more.

Given our shared challenges, it seems that we should focus our communities and building shared solutions!

Let’s build a better academy.
