On gratitude to my academic community over the holidays

On gratitude this holiday season.

Too often, academics focus on the work, the challenges, and the outcomes in their professional lives.

Too rarely, academics take time to celebrate the joy, the accomplishments and the people that populate their professional lives.

Take time to thank the people who help make you better this holiday season.

As we finally emerge from the pandemic, I want to share my gratitude to my friends, colleagues, and collaborators.

I will not name names - bc I'm afraid I'd miss someone.

My list of people that I am grateful to is long.

I am grateful to my Ph.D. students - for making me think and laugh.

I am grateful to my colleagues at the Fox School Management Information Systems Department for supporting me and nudging me to grow more thoughtful and stronger.

I am grateful to my Department Chair - for demonstrating such caring and thoughtfulness for each member of our team.

I am grateful to my collaborators - for including me on teams and helping me learn.

I am grateful to my academic family - for being kind to my daughter.

I am grateful to my friends in my international academic community - for reminding me that the world is a bigger place than the United States - and making me feel part of that world.

I am grateful to the people that read my feed - and offer comments - y'all make the think and feel like I have an impact.

I am grateful to these many people, for the personal relationships, the moments of support, and the joy they bring to my life.

I am also grateful to many people who support the institutions that make my academic life possible.

My dean and his team - for navigating the dynamic, sometimes contradictory, winds of the Fox School of Business at Temple University

The journal editors - who take cut out swaths of personal time to manage papers - too often do without thanks. They have the best and worst job in the field - being able to accept papers, but all too often having to say no.

The reviewers - whose comments teach me how to improve my work and teach me how to coach my own students.

To Reviewer 2, for keeping me humble. While I grumble, each tough comment affords a lesson to learn. I appreciate that.

To Prospect Press Vermont and the publishers - who support faculty and keep our intellectual ecosystem vibrant.

And to the staff at my professional associations - esp the Association for Information Systems - who leave the glory to the volunteers, but make the business of conferences, journals and more possible.

I am certain that there are people and organizations that I've missed.

It takes a community to sustain an academic and to sustain academic communities.

I'm grateful to everyone.

Happy holidays.
