Three years ago, I promised my last PhD student at the University of Alabama that I would attend her dissertation defense in person.
At 3:30 AM, my alarm reminded me I had to pack.
At 4:30 AM, I joined the longest TSA security line of my life.
At 5:30 AM, I boarded a flight on my first leg to Tuscaloosa to attend her Monday defense.
I could not be more delighted to see my student and my friends on her committee - everyone that mattered to me at Alabama - but one - will be there!
I can’t wait to celebrate Ning’s defense - she has been a case study in patience and persistence.
A moment on Ning - she is finishing despite her co-chairs moving, her department forgetting to pay her, and being assigned to teach or TA 1,000 student sections - all the while raising kids, interviewing for jobs, and publishing journal papers - truly a remarkable woman!
This Fall, Ning will join Loyola of Chicago - where I am certain she will continue to demonstrate the research excellence and commitment to teaching - that I’ve come to know and love these past five years.
