On placing PhD students in a job (or there really is such thing as reflected glory).

In 20 years as a faculty member, there’s still no greater joy than placing a PhD student (current or former) in a job.

Each year, I have a new wave of students go on the job market.

As they do, I pause and reflect on how we (me and them) have grown since we met.

I always feel proud of the students.

The positive changes are remarkable - in their ability to articulate and pursue ideas - and in my understanding of the world - because I learn as much from them as they do from me.

As each goes out into the world, there is a bit of sadness - because most never return to campus - and become conference friends and zoom call faces.

When each student places in a job, I feel blessed to have played a small part in their journey.

While I helped them along the way, when the students earn tenure and secure their spot in the Academy, I always feel good about a job well done.

To all the PhD students, good luck on the job market.

And to all the advisors, thank you - it’s not always fun - but it is a wonderful journey - and take a moment to bask in the reflected glory of your newly placed students - it is a sign that you’ve done something right!
