On respect and loyalty to your academic mentors.

Writer's picture: Jason ThatcherJason Thatcher

Years ago, an assistant professor cared enough to tell me that I was not performing as I should & suggested some changes so I could be a better student.

I listened and improved.

Later, when my job talks didn’t go well, she called me with helpful advice.

I landed the next job.

Today, she asked me to lunch.

I dropped everything.

I went to lunch with her.

I had no choice. She made my life & my life with the teen possible.

One may become many things in your academic life, but one should never forget the people who made your life possible.

I will always honor her advice & her impact on my life.

I won’t mention names - bc it’s not what she would want - but I will always be thankful for her advice & impact on my life.

I pay her back with each student I help.

Mentoring matters.
