On simple joy derived from advising Ph.D. students.

Writer's picture: Jason ThatcherJason Thatcher

I was shaken from concentrating on course preparation.

By joy shared by Ph.D. students.

One reported receiving outstanding teaching evaluations.

One received their first major journal revision.

One took a great leap forward in their research design.

Too often.

Faculty complain about the effort required to advise Ph.D. students.

Quell that impulse.

Focus on the joy Ph.D. students bring.

When they grow.

When they mature.

When they demonstrate the potential to change the world.

Take time this week.

To revel in this simple pleasure.

Take a moment.

Reflect on all of your students - be they Ph.D., master's, or undergraduate.

Note their progress.

Take pride in their wins.

Take joy in their accomplishments.

Know that.

Through your students.

You are changing the world.
