After going back and forth on editing a paper, my student and I realized that we were not using the same settings in our software - one was more casual and one was academic.
Where one suggested 96 or so edits, the other suggested 123.
Having the software optimize different goals was confusing - esp. bc one of the authors was a more experienced writer than the other.
So we synched goals.
This simple switch sped up our ability to collaborate effectively.
Why post about it?
Because the simple setting difference was having a bullwhip effect on our collaboration, adding friction to our process & making work more challenging.
If you are a PhD student, don't hesitate to ask about settings in software, and you'll minimize grumpy snapbacks from your advisor!
By attending to the small things, you'll minimize friction in collaboration & research will become a lot more fun!
Have a great week!
