With conference season here again ... I repeat my call for help stopping sexual harassment at academic events.
As a program director, I sign off on our students' requests for conference travel.
Each time I sign a travel request form, I say a little prayer asking that each student comes home safe and unharmed.
I hope they don't say anything too dumb or drink too much.
I pray they are not sexually harassed or pressured into doing something dumb.
Too many senior faculty, mostly men, seem to view students and early career scholars as something other than colleagues.
These "senior faculty" need a wake-up call.
Conferences should be safe for everyone.
If you spot someone in a tough spot, help them out. If you see misconduct, report it. If someone asks for help, don't question why, just give it.
Academe should be safe for everyone.
Let's build a safer academy together.
